La expresión “the great equalizer” proviene del esatdounidense Horace Man que en el siglo 19 dijo
La educación es el gran igualador de las circunstancias de los hombres.
y la utilizaba para defender el derecho a una educación pública y universal.
Más recientemente la misma expresión aparece con frecuencia en una película sobre ajedrez llamada Critical Thinking, donde unos jóvenes de un instituto marginal consiguen ganar torneos nacionales en EEUU.
No importa lo rico o lo pobre que seas, a qué colegio de élite hayas asistido o no, qué cárcel pisaste o no, porque el ajedrez es el gran igualador.

Hoy mismo el ajedrez ha mostrado su capacidad de ser un gran igualador en un contexto completamente diferente: un usuario palestino de reddit compartía esta captura de pantalla de una partida contra un jugador israelí:

La partida de ajedrez con mayor audiencia online de la historia
El ajedrez se está ganando el título de rey de los ‘e-sports’ con partidas como esta entre la Maestra Internacional Irene Sukandar y un jugador amateur. Con más de 1,5 millones de espectadores en directo (acumula ya 11 millones de visualizaciones), esta partida es un gran ejemplo de qué buscan los internautas: drama, nacionalismo, celebridades y la búsqueda de la verdad. Un cóctel que apasiona al gran público online.
El drama es la base de esta historia que nace como un intrascendente suceso y crece hasta convertirse en un acontecimiento de interés nacional en uno de los países más poblados del mundo.
Resumimos cronológicamente el nacimiento y apogeo de un drama moderno:
- Un streamer de ajedrez, Levy Rozman juega una partida online contra un jugador anónimo que sospechosamente juega partidas perfectas, el streamer lo acusa de hacer trampas
- Los seguidores del streamer consiguen prohibir la cuenta de este usuario y atacan su figura
- El jugador prohibido realiza una defensa lacrimógena y asegura que el juego perfecto se debe a que su padre es un maestro anónimo de ajedrez. Consigue montar una turba nacionalista que acosa al streamer.
- Padre e hijo aparecen en el programa de un famoso youtuber indonesio y el caso se convierte paulatinamente en un asunto de estado en Indonesia
- Una jugadora profesional de ajedrez indonesia asegura que la historia de padre e hijo no es creíble, y reta al padre a un duelo a tres partidas
- La jugadora profesional arrolla al padre en un duelo visto en directo por 1,5 millones de personas con un contundente 3-0
Se dibujan aquí los elementos clave del entretenimiento del futuro, por un lado, cómo el ajedrez, por su sencillez y universalidad tiene un gran potencial online. Por otro lado, lo influyentes que se están convirtiendo los streamers, youtubers, etc. por su capacidad de convocatoria.
Y por último, cómo el drama, la tragicomedia, el nacionalismo, la épica… los mismos elementos de siempre que movilizan las entrañas de los humanos son los elementos clave para atraer a las masas.

Moshi and Philadelphia are 7,500m (12,200km) and 7 time zones away. From a small village a small rural village next to a sugar cane plantation in Tanzania we traveled to Philadelphia and back, a zoom call that reminds as all that the world is one click away.
Breaking the skill level
Chess is new to Moshi, we just started introducing this powerful educational tool, for us, teachers included, to receive a lesson from such an skilled player was a delight, like watching Mozart play the piano, we could clearly notice the talent on the other side of the board.
In education it is important to be introduced to excellence, it shows up as a goal in our individual imagination.
Breaking the gender barrier
Women in Tanzania play many too many times a secondary role in education and that is way it was so great to have female students with female teachers and female professors. Role models are essential in education and it is very important to be able to identify with them.
Breaking the cultural barrier
It is sometimes hard to imagine worlds beyond our doorstep and sometimes it is best to just peek into them. Yes, America is a completely different world, but after looking through the mirror glass, we see the smile of another human being that makes us feel united and related.
Jennifer joined the Hall of Fame in our classroom, together with the greatest and the closest chess champions that remind us that dreams are just one step away. Thank you very much!

Más de un millón de usuarios registrados en la plataforma de ajedrez open-source lichess.org pueden reclamar haber vencido indirectamente a Magnus Carlsen, el vigente campeón del mundo.
Esta base de datos permite analizar el grado de victoria contra Carlsen, basta con introducir el nombre de usuario y sabrás si alguna vez has vencido indirectamente al campeón del mundo de ajedrez, Magnus Carlsen, por lo que podrías técnicamente reclamar ser mejor jugador que él.
Solo 37 personas tienen el honor de haber vencido directamente a Carlsen en esta plataforma, pero ya son 2.305 jugadores los que han ganado contra esas 37 y ya son más de 75.000 personas las que pueden reclamar ser mejores que Carlsen en tercer grado.
Es un número similar al famoso número de grados de separación de Kevin Bacon y permite a todos los ajedrecistas sentirse más cercanos.

Un día de ajedrez en Born to Learn
En el centro educativo de Born to Learn (BTL) en Moshi, Tanzania, nos sumamos a la celebración del día internacional del ajedrez el 20 de julio. Para ello contamos con un ajedrez gigante donado por Meliá Arusha que agradecemos de corazón.
El club de ajedrez de BTL es una ínfima parte de un gran proyecto educativo donde más de 300 niñas y niños de diversas edades y circunstancias reciben semanalmente educación, nutrición en un espacio acogedor.
Con la excusa del día del ajedrez, intentamos promocionar el juego ante los diversos grupos del colegio: guardería, el curso de inglés y los participantes de las actividades extraescolares.
Guardería
En la actualidad BTL cuenta con 4 clases de guardería con más de 100 niños y niñas de entre 3 y 6 años. Se trata de un programa de gran éxito que les ofrece educación y nutrición gratuitas en una edad fundamental para el desarrollo físico y cognitivo de nuestros pequeños.Además de los beneficios educativos y nutritivos, esto reduce la carga de trabajo para sus familias, especialmente las madres.
La enseñanza del ajedrez se puede adaptar a todas las edades. En este caso, es una excelente herramienta para el desarrollo de la memoria, capacidad psicomotriz, socialización y lenguaje, todo ello en un ambiente jovial.
Realizamos una actividad de 40 minutos donde aprendieron los nombres de las piezas y pudieron caminar por el tablero experimentando líneas rectas, diagonales, colores y patrones.
Curso de inglés
Cada mañana un grupo de jóvenes de entre 15 y 18 años fuera del sistema escolar vienen a BTL a mejorar su nivel de inglés en preparación para reincorporarse al sistema educativo.
Con este grupo nos centramos en el ajedrez como juego, para entretenernos y relajar la mente después del intenso estudio, el ajedrez ocupa la mente y libera de otras preocupaciones.
Los jóvenes comienzan a jugar y competir desde el primer día, aquí aprenden a jugar con la torre. Por primera vez, maestros y alumnos se enfrentan en igualdad de condiciones ante un nuevo reto.
Extraescolares
De 4 a 7 de la tarde BTL recibe a más de 150 alumnas y alumnos de primaria que vienen al centro después de sus clases de primaria para aprender música, jugar a baloncesto, revisar mates… y muchas actividades más, para complementar su educación y también para recibir una muy bienvenida cena temprana.
El ajedrez se encuentra entre estas actividades y contamos con más de 50 participantes en el Club de Ajedrez. El lunes realizamos actividades de exhibición y estaban muy ilusionados con el juguete nuevo, despertó también el interés de todos los demás.
El primer grupo más joven realizó una actividad más sencilla de colocar las piezas en el tablero, el ajedrez es un juego muy versátil que ofrece muchas actividades, con los niños es muy fácil porque siempre muestran su voluntad por jugar.
El plato fuerte del día fue la partida por equipos de los mayores, que estuvo que enfrentó a los equipos de Jasinta y Manase, los vigentes campeones de BTL. La emoción y tensión era equiparable a la de cualquier gran evento deportivo y el público se implicó intensamente.
Finalmente, y como es habitual en Tanzania, la actividad finalizó con el jolgorio y la alegría que tanto apreciamos en este país. Aquí la vida siempre se celebra.
A World of Chess in One Day
The Born to Learn Educational Center in Moshi, Tanzania, joined the celebration of the World Chess Day the 20th of July. For that purpose we used for the first time the giant chess-set that Meliá Arusha recently donated and that we wholeheartedly thank them for.
The chess club in Born to Learn is just a tiny part of a much larger educational project where over 300 kids of all ages and circumstances visit our center in Newland every week for education, nutrition and mentoring.
With the excuse of the International Chess Day we showcased the game to a broader audience, first to a group of 23 Kindergarten kids (4-5 y/o), then to 20 kids from the English Course (14-17 y/o) and finally a general public of about 100 kids (12-16 y/o) that observed the exhibition matches.
Kindergarten
Currently Born to Learn (BTL) has 4 kindergarten classes totaling almost 100 kids. It is a very successful program that offers a much needed nutritional and educational basis on a fundamental age, it also provides a much needed time relief for their families.
Chess is a resource as any other for the kids on these ages, where they are learning very basic memory, motion and language skills and where the most important part is the development of their emotional and social values in good fun.
We did a 40 minute activity where the kids learned the names of the pieces and they run around the board to experiment with the colors, lines and textures.
English Course
Every morning there is a group of 20 kids of ages between 15 and 18 years old that for diverse reason haven’t been able to register in a school. BTL offers them the opportunity to improve their English level in preparation to reincorporating to school or to any other formation.
With this group we focused on chess as a fun activity to relax the mind and to interact with the other kids in English, supervised by their teachers.
When we teach chess, we start to play and compete from day 1, here teachers and students practice with the rook, the first piece we usually teach. You can see how they are engaged, entertained and they socialize in a different manner with their teacher and they release stress. For the first time, the playing field is leveled for teachers and students
After School Programs
From 4 to 7 pm BTL receives over 150 kids that after finishing school have the opportunity to play football, learn music, do handcrafts, review Maths or English… and many other activities that serve as a complement to their education and personal development. They also receive a much welcomed early dinner every day.
Among these activities we have the Chess Club that has over 50 regular participants. This was their day to shine and for starters they were ecstatic about the giant chess-set donation that BTL received.
The chess set by itself has been a great marketing strategy, it attracted the attention of all of the kids, including teachers. The first group of younger kids did a simple game of setting up the board, this shows how dynamic and simple can chess get to be, you don’t need to be a genius, just show your willingness to play.
The main course of the day was the big match-up of the big kids. Jasinta and Manase, the best players in the school, lead each a team of eight players that would take turns to move. The tension and excitement were great and you could see how the public would get involved, even if many were not familiar with the specifics of the game.
Finally, as it is common in Tanzania and a good reason why we keep coming, they all celebrated joyfully, jumping, laughing, dancing, sharing, because be it chess, music, winning, losing… life is always celebrated here.
Our Chess Programs in Tanzania
Born to Learn is an NGO that has been operating in the Kilimanjaro Region in Tanzania for over ten years. There it provides educational, health, nutritional and social support to hundreds of children.
In 2018 we started a Chess Program among the after-school activities that the center in Newland provides.
January 2018, Chess in Newland
We started with two groups, totaling 50 children, half of them preschoolers and the other half of diverse ages from primary school. We also trained 3 local teachers to be able to continue with the chess club on their own.
The project was very successful, the children were engaged immediately and the benefits were evident in every lesson. The children show a higher capacity of concentration, they developed critical thinking skills and they also socialize in a respectful and constructive environment.
July 2018, Chess in the Royal School Nja Panda
That same year in July we started a collaboration with Premier Chess and the Make a Difference. The Chess Master Evan Rabin from New York arrived with a group of volunteer chess players to teach a 1 week chess workshop to 50 secondary school students in the Royal Secondary School.
We also played the first interscholastic tournament in the Kilimanjaro region, were 4 children from BTL successfully participated.
2019
By the second year over 200 children in Newland have been introduced to the game, we play tournaments regularly and it has become just another activity for the development of the children. They have the chance to play twice a week during schooldays and the chess club meets on Saturdays.
April 2019, Chess in Uganda
In April we started the first international collaboration with the Robert Katende Initiative, reknowned for Disney’s movie The Queen of Katwe.
One of the original pioneers featured in the acclaimed movie joined our efforts. We organized a 2 week workshop were we taught 80 students from primary one to primary four in Uganda, in the Spanish run school Kelele, near Fort Portal.
All the teachers learned how to play chess, and they did have a blast. We provided special training to continue with the chess club to one of the teachers and to one of the cooks, who showed a lot of interest for the game.
June 2019, Chess in Kikavu
Kikavu is the closest village to Newland, back in the Kilimanjaro region, there we started teaching chess to the children there in June with the goal of extending the game in the area, we organized a two week workshop where we taught 30 children that can now visit the Chess Club in Newland to play against their neighbors.
July 2019 Chess in Uru
The collaboration with Make a Difference continued the next year and we did a one week workshop were we taught over 50 secondary school students. Once more we held an interscholastic tournament at the end of the tournament. This is an article published in Chessbase.
2020
We started the year strong with two new projects in the Kigoma region in west Tanzania. In Kigoma city we taught 20 children in a local kindergarten associated to Born To Learn.
January 2020, Chess in Kabanga
Kabanga holds a boarding center for children with special needs. We taught the game to over 80 children and to two teacher assistants. The impact of the game in the center has been inspiring and we aim to continue in these kind of projects, since chess has proven to be very adequate to their needs.
Chess from now on
The chess activities in the Born To Learn are going strong and they continue to be the foundation for the expansion of chess in the area. Currently we are starting the collaboration with other centers to expand the chess community in the Moshi area.
The goal is to teach children in other schools and to organize tournaments that will allow children to socialize and challenge themselves. It will also be an opportunity for the local teachers to gain experience in new environments.
The Team
Luis Cuerdo leads the chess program in BTL, he is a certified chess teacher that has been collaborating with Born to Learn for the last 4 years and who has been teaching chess all over the world.
However this is not a one man effort, one of the main goals is to get local teachers involved to guarantee the sustainability of the project. At the moment three more teachers from Born To Learn are qualified to teach Chess and to assist in the workshops. They are Frank Mbise, also a music teacher and the Kindergarten and Primary School Teachers Janeth Macha and Irene Silayo
